Can't hear or be heard?

You didn't break anything. This takes about one minute to fix, and there is nothing to download.

Try this first

Click the microphone button at the bottom of the video screen. If the microphone picture has a line through it, it is muted. One click turns it back on.

Still not working? Pick the browser you use

Your browser is the program you use to visit websites. Click yours below.

Google Chrome (colorful circle)
  1. Look at the very top of your window, in the long box where the website's name is.
  2. Click the small padlock on the left side of that box. (On newer versions it may look like two small sliders.)
  3. Find Microphone and turn it on (it may say Allow).
  4. Reload the page: click the circular arrow near the top left.
  5. If a message asks "Allow microphone?", click Allow.
Microsoft Edge (blue and green wave)
  1. Look at the very top of your window, in the long box where the website's name is.
  2. Click the small padlock on the left side of that box.
  3. Click Permissions for this site if you see it.
  4. Find Microphone and choose Allow.
  5. Reload the page: click the circular arrow near the top left.
  6. If a message asks "Allow microphone?", click Allow.
Safari on a Mac (compass)
  1. Look at the very top of your screen for the word Safari, next to the apple symbol.
  2. Click Safari, then Settings for This Website.
  3. Find Microphone and choose Allow.
  4. Reload the page: click the circular arrow at the top.
  5. If a message asks to use your microphone, click Allow.
iPhone or iPad
  1. Leave the video call for a moment — you can come right back.
  2. Open the Settings app (the gray gear).
  3. Scroll down and tap Safari. (On some phones, tap Apps first, then Safari.)
  4. Tap Microphone, then choose Allow.
  5. Go back to Safari and reload the page. If it asks to use your microphone, tap Allow.
Nothing worked? Check Windows itself

Sometimes the computer is blocking the microphone, not the browser.

  1. Click the Start button (the Windows symbol at the bottom of your screen).
  2. Click Settings (the gear).
  3. Click Privacy & security, then Microphone.
  4. Turn Microphone access on.
  5. Turn Let apps access your microphone on.
  6. Go back to the video call page and reload it.

Still stuck? That's okay. Join the room anyway — you can see and hear everyone even if they can't hear you yet. Type hello in the chat box and let us know. You are still very welcome.
